Twitter may be a hellhole, but it’s our hellhole and we love it. Every year I, possibly the least Twitter-savvy member of the Stereogum staff, am tasked with compiling a list of some of the best/worst/most memorable music tweets of the year. For the purposes of this list, we are defining music tweets as tweets by musicians, not about music. If you want to be considered for next year’s list, go buy a synth or something. My picks are below; Ryley Walker gets a lifetime achievement award and Jack Dorsey’s beard gets a polite wave goodbye.

16. Laura Stevenson’s baby just said merch 🙂

15. Meghan Trainor and her husband will not apologize for their side-by-side toilets

14. Lil Nas X celebrates Pride Month

13. Dave Davies gets kinky

12-11. Cardi B makes friends

10. Perfume Genius takes a stand for journalism

9. Dionne Warwick tells it like it is

8. Charly Bliss make our job look easy

7. Mariah Carey fights the good fight

6. Brass Against apologize for singer urinating on fan’s face during festival set

5. Car Seat Headrest doesn’t miss us 🙁

4. Liam Gallagher loves Greta’s work for climate change

3-2.Phoebe Bridgers calls David Crosby a little bitch

1. Nicki Minaj’s cousin in Trinidad won’t get the vaccine cuz his friend got it & became impotent. His testicles became swollen. His friend was weeks away from getting married, now the girl called off the wedding.

Back in 2011, Interpol and David Lynch joined forces for a special project at Coachella where they overlaid the director’s short film I Touch a Red Button Man with the band’s 2010 single “Lights.” Now, Interpol are releasing that collaboration as a limited series of eight NFTs through HIFI Labs.

Lynch X Interpol includes newly recorded versions of “Lights” featuring [Interpol lead guitarist] Daniel Kessler on piano. Fans will also be given the opportunity to put their own creative touch on one of the NFTs in a “3D gallery,” with one lucky participant receiving the NFT for free.

Auctions for Lynch X Interpol begin October 26th.

This whole thing seems like something Lynch would be staunchly opposed to given his history with technology. A while back, he made it very clear that he thinks movies should be viewed in theaters instead of on smartphones, saying, “It’s such a sadness that you think you’ve seen a film on your fucking telephone. Get real.” There’s no public statement by the Twin Peaks director about his thoughts on a decade-old collaboration being reformatted for online-only viewing and slapped with a whopping price tag, but apparently he was cool with it since these NFTs are going on sale. So who knows!

Perhaps that explains why Interpol are so enthused about these Lynch X Interpol NFTs existing at all. “To be frank, Interpol is crazy about David Lynch, and we are over the moon to have ever been able to align our name with his in an artistic forum,” said frontman Paul Banks. “Humbly, we believe that as digital artifacts go, these are worthy of preservation in the infinite digital realm.” It seems like even they know it’s a feat this was approved.

NFTs are infamous for many reasons, arguably the biggest of which is their unethical carbon footprint on the planet. According to Interpol, buyers won’t have to feel guilty because their NFTs are conscientious and safe. “We are pleased to enter the NFT space in as ethical a manner as we could, in conjunction with Aerial,” said Banks. “We hope to bring an artful and interactive approach to this launch.”

Interpol and David Lynch are the latest in an ever-growing pool of celebrities, artists, and musicians who are profiting off of NFTs. Grimes raked in $6 million at the start of the year, Azealia Banks sold an audio sex tape for $18,000, and Aphex Twin cashed in some original visual artwork for $128,000. Even the dead can’t escape the trend, as Chris Cornell’s final portraits were auctioned off as NFTs back in August.

In other news, Interpol are hard at work on their upcoming seventh studio album, which will follow 2018’s Marauder and their 2019 EP A Fine Mess. As for Lynch, he’s allegedly working on a new project for Netflix, perhaps to fill the giant void left by Twin Peaks leaving the streaming platform back in June.

With data being readily available on streaming platforms, musicians and booking agencies can book more location-targeted shows. For emerging artists who haven’t played a tour, most booking agents have to take a risk about how many tickets they can sell. With the availability of streaming data, now everyone can see how many listeners there are in each city and country, and they can make a more realistic estimate of how many listeners they can bring to the show.

Streaming data also allows many booking agents to discover artists early in their career. There are many artists on streaming platforms who might have thousands of listeners and might not have played a show, nor considered playing live at all. This information can be used both by the booking agent, and an artist to book shows. In this blog post, we’re sharing four ways you can use data for booking shows.

1. Look at the Location Data

Most streaming platforms will give you data about your listeners based on demographic and geographic information. The geographic information will typically be broken down into cities and countries. Location data will probably be one of the most important and useful data points you can use for booking shows because the streaming platforms give you the number of unique listeners. If you have a substantial amount of listeners in a given city and you haven’t played there yet, it would be a logical next step to look for venues to play in that city. On the contrary, it would not make sense to book a show in a city if you don’t have any listeners there. This way, you can save money and make much better-touring decisions.

With the streaming data, you also can see the data for individual songs. That way, you can also see which styles perform better than others, and if they do, where do they perform well. The reverse look up based on location is unfortunately not available right now. In any case, if your music is on a streaming platform, you will be able to see where your overall audience lives.

Looking for your next gig? Search ReverbNation Opportunities today.

2. Get More Followers to Follow Your Page

When it comes to listener data, the number of listeners is not the sole factor to take into account. In fact, if you take just the number of listeners as a decision-making factor, you’re probably making a mistake, because not everyone who listens to your music might become a fan. Someone might have heard your song through a playlist or through a radio algorithm. The people who truly might come to your shows can be better scaled with the number of followers you have. These are people who actually follow your music actively, and are interested to hear more music from you and who come to your shows. So, it would be a great idea to get people to follow your page, and use that data to see what locations your followers are in.

3. Look into Big Cities, and Smaller Venues to Start

Once you aggregate your listener and follower data in a given city, it would be a great idea to start with smaller venues. When you’re first starting your career, it looks so much better to be sold out on a smaller venue than to have a large venue and not even fill it up halfway. Moreover, creating a sold-out concert experience adds a new level of demand to your future shows in that given city.

Playing in big cities is also great because you have more people who might come to a show, and you have more press outlets to promote your show and get the word out.

4. Check out Tour Locations of Artists Who Sound Like You

A solid way to build your tour schedule is also to check out the previous tour schedules of artists who sound like you and who are in a similar stage of their artistic career as you. Perhaps they did their data research as well, and you can utilize that. A show that has turned out well for them might also work for you. Especially if you have a similar sound, it would mean that the audience for that concert might also come to your show. In this case, you can analyze what worked and what did not work for them. Better yet, you can contact that artist and pick their brains about their tour experience in a given location or venue.

These are four ways you can use data to book shows. Keep in mind that there are many other ways you can use data, as it is an ever-evolving technology with new opportunities. However, today’s platforms offer a great way for you to use data to make better booking choices, and you should absolutely take advantage of it.

Outbreak Fest has announced that Every Time I Die will be the final headliners at next year’s festival, joining Turnstile and Knocked Loose.

  • READ MORE: Outbreak Fest’s tenth edition was a visceral, thrilling celebration of the last true subculture

The festival will mark its 10-year anniversary from June 24-26, 2022, at the Bowlers Exhibition Centre in Manchester. The line-up is completed by the addition of acts including post-hardcore band Touché Amoré, Philadelphia’s Mannequin Pussy and shoegaze group Slow Crush.

Also on the bill for next year’s festival are Basement, who will play a 10th anniversary set featuring material from their albums ‘Colourmewithkindness’ and ‘I Wish I Could Stay Here’.

They’ll be joined by Chubby and the Gang, Higher Power, Citizen and more. See the full Outbreak 2022 line-up below, and find out more about tickets here.

As well as the bands on the line-up, Outbreak has announced that next year’s festival will include a skate ramp, art and photography exhibition, record and zine fair, independent market and more. Reviewing Outbreak Fest in 2018, NME called the event “a visceral, thrilling celebration of the last true subculture.”

Every Time I Die released their ninth album, ‘Radical’, on October 22 via Epitaph, marking their first album in five years. It featured the singles ‘AWOL’, ‘Post-Boredom’ and ‘Planet Shit’, as well as the double A-side ‘A Colossal Wreck’/‘Desperate Pleasures’.

Meanwhile, following frontman Keith Buckley’s recent announcement of his impromptu touring hiatus, the band said in a statement on social media that they’re working on their issues with Buckley “privately”.

“Now that I have seen the ‘official statement’ indicating that ETID is finishing the tour without their singer, I think I’m ready to tell you all a little bit about exactly WHY my mental health has had to become a priority over ETID,” Buckley initially tweeted.

After cancelling the last three shows of their tour, the band tweeted an apology to fans, writing: “Please give us a moment. And we will all see you at Tid The Season.”

Skillet frontman and Christian rocker John Cooper blasted Rage Against the Machine while defending his own anti-vax stance in a new interview.

You might remember Cooper’s delusional comments from earlier this year following Cardi B’s controversial Grammy performance. At the time, Cooper compared the Grammy Awards to Hitler and condemned Cardi B for the sexual nature of her stage show. Cooper then tried to backtrack on his remarks.

Now the Skillet singer has taken a pot shot at Rage Against the Machine, an outspokenly progressive and left-leaning act. In an interview with Apologia Radio, a church-run program, Cooper elaborated on his thesis that vaccines are a tool of government control “more about tyranny than they are actually keeping people safe.”

“What’s really weird to me is that I’ve been speaking out about my faith in Christ for a long, long time in the mainstream world,” said Cooper. “Now, let’s be honest — not everybody in the mainstream world is nuts about that. They don’t necessarily love hearing about Jesus, but they have always put up with me — some have supported me even. But I’ll tell you what: the most kickback I have ever received — ever — for my faith has been on my stance on vaccine mandates and mask mandates. It is as if I just — like the unforgivable sin.”

He continued, “So, a lot the bands, they just don’t know what to do … You’re in an entertainment industry that’s largely driven by social media and media at large. You’re not allowed to speak anything against… I mean, you’ve got Rage Against the Machine telling people that if they don’t get a vaccine… Rage Against the Machine has become the machine,” Cooper said. “It’s crazy. I’m, like, wait a minute — I’m the revolutionary here? I’m the revolutionary and Rage Against the Machine is just ‘government rock’ now.”

Ironically, RATM guitarist Tom Morello has been questioned for his unexpected friendship with right-wing mouthpiece Ted Nugent, whose has also spouted anti-vax sentiments during the pandemic. Morello defended his friendship with Nugent, however, citing their shared beliefs on the importance of free speech.

“I reserve the right to be friends with anybody,” Morello said. “I reserve the right to confront opinions I disagree with, with openheartedness and love, or by throwing a brick. That’s up to me.”

Assuming it’s safe to do so this spring, Rage Against the Machine will finally kick off their twice-postponed reunion tour, with tickets available here. Skillet, meanwhile, recently announced a new album titled Dominion, which arrives on January 14th.

Watch John Cooper’s interview with Apologia Radio below.

Anna Katarina is an up-and-coming singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist from British Columbia, Canada. Gunter Brenner is a producer and musician based in Peru. Not too long ago, they released a lovely indie-pop tune, entitled, “Lost Without You.”

Anna Katarina and Gunter Brenner – “Lost Without You”

“I crossed the line you say – as if I was trying to let you down. You think I’m messy and unkind in leaving pieces of me behind. But you’re the sun burning in my eyes, you left me blinded by your glowing lies. Now, I’m driving in the dark over broken vows and question marks. I’ve got the wheel in my hands, the radio’s up, I’ve got the bitter taste of a love gone bad. The rearview mirror is black and this road’s in retrograde. It’s got me feeling like you’re already gone.” – lyrics

‘Lost Without You’ tells a heartfelt tale about a vulnerable young woman who feels lost and dejected because her significant other isn’t around anymore. Apparently, her partner took her on a long ride and left her in a very dark and lonely place. Later, she admits, “You knocked me out with your cat-and-mouse game. Now I’m speeding through the dust chasing any part that’s left of us.”

‘Lost Without You’ contains a relationship-based narrative, ear-pleasing vocals, and catchy melodies that will resonate well with fans of Madonna, Lana Del Rey, and Shawn Hook. The likable tune possesses guitar-laden instrumentation flavored with indie-pop, Americana, and acoustic elements. Furthermore, “Lost Without You” serves as a tasty appetizer to what listeners can expect to hear from Anna Katarina and Gunter Brenner in the near future as they continue to release new music.

“I drank your water and now I’m high. Can’t tell the difference between left and right.”

New York’s Tama Gucci has been slowly shifting the expectations of both R&B and electronic music with his incomparable style. Fusing the tropes of the two genres by way of heartfelt, tender songwriting and razor sharp avant electronic beats, the singer-songwriter and producer has arrived at a unique intersection between pop and R&B grounded in his brand of futurism. Hailing from Miami and cutting his teeth on the city’s burgeoning underground queer scene before shifting to The Big Apple, Gucci’s sound draws from the motifs of Miami bass and his own preoccupation with jungle and breakbeats. He dances between Y2k nostalgia and cyber age futurism (his name is Tama Gucci, for God’s sake) in a way that locates his sound equally as much in the past as it does the future. On Almost Blue, his latest EP released on Sinderlyn, both these influences inform the backdrop for his raspy, breathless R&B poetry on a collection of tracks that key in into the anxieties of love and phases of transition in the contemporary world.

There’s a deft romanticism to Almost Blue that is most palpable by way of Tama Gucci’s melody and lyrics. Thematically, the EP focuses on the human experiences of love and sex. Lyrically, Tama Gucci keeps things simple. The language is simple, favouring hooks and melodic pattern over implication or metaphoric diatribes. There’s little room to hide behind the pining “Would you die for me / Because I would die for you” of Show Me, or the millennial poetry “No more fighting… let’s just fuck all night” of Bedroom. The latter is a particularly strong moment, with Tama Gucci sighing out a sort of scuzzy serenade over a kinetic breakbeat accented with robot sex sounds and electronic cowbells in the style of I Wanna Dance WIth Somebody. But it’s the track’s final act, layering Tama Gucci’s voice atop itself and a soft drone note, that puts a lot of Almost Blue into perspective. By juxtaposing the human-to-a-fault quality of his subject matter and lyrics with increasingly more computerised sounds, Tama Gucci is attempting to code the romance album for the virtual age where intimacy is no longer reliant on being physically present and where human connection can last as long as it takes to swipe left. While this juxtaposition is less effectual on tracks like Sweater, where it is damped by worn out romance tropes like swelling strings and the image of Tama Gucci wearing his heart on his lover’s sweater, when it lands it works. This is the case for tracks like Challenge or Put It In Drive, where Tama Gucci performs his lyrics with the same sort of earnestness as Marvin Gaye or D’Angelo. Challenge’s “I feel so cute / Baby I’m in the mood / And I’m feeling you / Baby, come bust a move” is as great of a romance lyric as you might get in the post-Tinder world, while the breathless moans of “Baby, wait for me” on Put It In Drive speak toward the anxiety of moving too quickly by placing its lethargic sense of longing against a backdrop of cyber bleeps and hyper futuristic percussion.

That anxiety of things moving at breakneck speed while you lag behind is at the crux of Almost Blue. It’s a rumination of sorts on the fear of being behind where one would want to be in love, compounded by the rapid pace of the world’s evolution. It’s a record about being almost there, about being almost at the same point as everyone else. But then, with the unstoppable speed at which technology and the digital world begin to consume our reality it seems Tama Gucci is asking if he will ever get there. But perhaps getting there is no longer the point; perhaps the point is to exist in the almost, because when everything is moving at hyperspeed it’s the almost that feels most like the present.

Adele should put a warning label on this album to let people know the emotional rollercoaster ride that they are about to go through.

5. Easy On Me

This song already has over 200 million listens on Spotify. I am responsible for like half of those.

When Adele dropped this song as a preview for the album, it felt like the world had a unanimous breakdown. Everyone I knew was posting on Instagram about how the song was in no way going easy on them. “Easy On Me” has been topping charts for weeks now and there is a reason for that: It is perfect.

4. Oh My God

Did Adele make a perfect rebound song?

I’m pretty sure the answer is yes. Honestly, the song is a great mix of emotional and pure feel-good vibes. All Adele wants is to have fun, and that’s all you will have listening to this track.

3. Cry Your Heart Out

Adele said, “we are dealing with and feeling all of her emotions today.”

The chorus builds a mantra for how to deal with the bad days: “Cry your heart out, clean your face, go at your own pace.” “Cry Your Heart Out” is an upbeat self-care guide for the days when you are just feeling down.

2. My Little Love

A beautiful conversation between Adele and her son.

The conversations between Adele and her son mixed with the beautifully repetitive chorus creates a heart-wrenching song about what kids go through in a divorce. The production of this song is built to tug on every one of your heartstrings.

1. To Be Loved

Did I tear up on the first listen of this song? Yes. Yes, I did.

Adele pours her heart into this masterpiece about self-love and self-awareness. You will feel every ounce of emotion she brings to the creation of “To Be Loved.” The pain and the strength are heard in every note and every voice crack.

If you’ve never been through a divorce or a major breakup, or haven’t been through one in a while, you will feel like you’re going through one listening to this album. Adele constructed an emotional rollercoaster ride with this album. 30 will have you going from dancing to tearing up from song to song.

I love that we are starting to get 6+ minute songs; not just from Adele, but artists in general. Adele’s use of 6+ minute songs doesn’t feel dragged out or boring; each song feels like it has intention and purpose. The production of the album is classic Adele (Which is beautiful production). The last three songs being put back-to-back almost feels illegal with how well they complement each other. Every part of this album feels deliberate. Whether you are one of Adele’s biggest fans or not, 30 is well worth the listen.

What Grade Would You Give “30?”
